Hello Huck, Actually, I disagree with me too. Unfortunately, I've had a couple of occasions now where a student took a friendly gesture such as going out for coffee (with others as you suggested) as an OK to skip a lab or two and was very upset when I told the student that the work would still have to be made up. Still others who see me as a really nice guy (and justifiably so :-)) are more upset if they do poorly than if I paid them less attention. This, of course, doesn't stop me from offering them as much help as I can provide. Then there was the $1000 attempted bribe.....but this was from a "student" I'd never even seen in class. Even after 30 years of teaching though, I know I'm still naive enough that if I felt personal outside attention was really needed, I'd give it. My policy is not engraved in stone. ---Ford |
