I'd been planning exactly the same sort of argument, and I agree with it strongly. The reality of 'giving a piece of your soul' is, I suspect, what is meant by 'becoming one flesh'. That it is such a strong link is why it should be restricted to marriage. But I think that there is also an issue about the authority of the bible that is worth further exploration. We interpret the death and resurrection of Jesus in terms of the bible; we therefore need to accept the bible in other areas; God is not a 'Pick and Mix' shop where we can choose the bits we like and reject the others - He is a real person whom we can only accept on his terms, as indicated in the bible. Which doesn't mean that the bible doesn't need to be interpreted, but where there is no serious doubt about what it is getting at, as in the case of sexual morality, we don't have the option of rejecting it because we don't like what it says!
