Man's Nature

In reply to Ah - the joys of a doctrinal argument!? submitted by Forgiven on July 01 2000 18:57:01

What I was responding to was this (emphasis is mine):

"the fact that everyone is in rebellion against God and deserves Hell"

Not to this:

"Doctrine is a pointer to the reality of faith, but by no means a certain one."

I believe that man is by nature good and was made to enjoy eternal life with God....that this is the reason for his creation. However, being given free will, man is also able to choose to act contrary to God's purpose, i.e. sin. This is manifested by being broken, bent, wounded, incomplete. And yet even in our brokeness, woundedness and incompleteness we usually still seek what we perceive as good. Often we are mistaken, and suffering for ourselves and for others is the result. What we need is healing, forgiveness, being made whole, justification (in the sense of being brought back to the reason for which we were created).

But I believe our brokeness, woundedness, being bent and incomplete is not in itself a reason for condemnation, rather it is a reason for mercy....and Jesus came to give us just that.
