There's real danger in not using our gifts, preferring instead to look at how they may not conform to our scripture interpretation and fearing God's wrath if we might "invest" them improperly. Consider the parable of the talents. The one who knew he was given the least (in apparent value) became fearful of his master. Instead of risking using what he was given for fear of punishment by his demanding master, he went out, dug a hole and buried what he'd been given. By doing so he ended up getting what he was so afraid of. He was branded as wicked and lazy. He had what he'd been given taken from him. His succombing to fear got him only what he'd feared. Those who accepted the risk and used what they'd been given not knowing for sure what the result would be or whether their master would be "pleased" were the ones rewarded. ---Ford |
