Even though I am a gay rights activist -- I support civil marriage for gays and the right of gays to adopt -- I have become very concerned with the overwhelming message from gay organizations that change is impossible. There is a data from a federal study of thousands of highschool students that shows that there are three times as many boys who have romantic feelings about both boys and girls as there are who have only romantic feelings about boys. iotw, bisexuality is quite common. Also, although I have no data on this I personally know people who had only same sex attraction when they were young who later in life began to have opposite sex attraction.

Whatever reason, homophobia or no, that your friend says that he doesn't want to be gay, I think it's important for him to be able to have a vision of himself living a heterosexual life if he is recoiling from a homosexual life. Robbie Kirkland comes to mind. Robbie had supportive parents who told him it was okay to be gay. He was gay bashed. He said he wasn't gay and that he didn't want to be gay, but apparently the adults who were close to him thought that he was gay and that he should accept his gay identity. He committed suicide when he was 14. Was it because of the gaybashing and a homophobic society? yes. But what role to the messages that he should accept being gay play in his decision??

Robbie got involved with Internet Porn -- read "Mum's story" on his memorial site.
