The problem you´re facing is pretty well the same as mine when my friend moved away. Looking back, the fact that I myself moved away (to more or less the same place) was probably partly in the hope of finding him again although I knew, deeper down, that it wouldnt make any difference: nothing could come of it. The come-down from this in my case took many years to sink in. It's a process of grieving really and I'm not sure that there is a way around it. In my own case it lead to a gradual moral decline though and I hope you can find ways of avoiding that. The best thing is to stay positive and go out there and try to be a friendly open guy anyway because this is the only way to move on from grief.
