Why do you regard this as a punishment from God? Perhaps this isn't from God but the devil. The Orthodox say that all humans are imperfect in their inner core. For us who come here it takes this form. For others it could be anger, overeating,gambling and so forth.
It leads to a lifetime of repentance, but we can fight it and blame only ourselves for our weaknesses and not God. But we need to turn to the Holy Trinity and seek His help in dealing with this major sin in all of our lives as well as all the little ones as well.
