Words do not have an intrinsic definition. Their definition is based entirely on our usage and understanding of the term. Thus why I feel compelled to do my part to influence the usage of the term in such a way that it is able to remain useful.
The point of having a term like YF is to enable us to differentiate between all the boys we know and the one (if any) whom we have a special relationship with. If people continue diluting the meaning of the term YF, that word loses its value and we find ourselves forced to create new terms to take its place. I've seen some forums start heading in such a direction with the creation of terms like SYF (special young friend) and LB (loved boy). I don't see going that far as necessary yet because correcting our usage is simple enough. But I do think we should be more careful about using the term properly. If you don't spend any significant amount of time alone with the boy in an environment of your choosing, chances are you shouldn't be calling him a YF. |
