I think the others have already given great advice, but I'd like to add a little bit about the idea of being not just a friend, but a mentor. As an adult, your role is not only to be a boy's bff, it's also to act as a mentor. The idea behind a mentor is that it is someone who can act as a role model, someone who can serve as an example of the kind of life a person would want to lead. If the kind of life you can invite a boy to live is a life of depression, obsession, and suicide attempts, how can you serve as a role model? Why would anyone want to live such a life? To be an effective role model you have to first live a lifestyle people would want to emulate. This includes not only resolving your emotional issues, but gaining some maturity. Boys aspire to be adults; they cant wait to grow up, they dream of: the day they get their license, the day they can move out of their parents house, the day they have a job and are making money. You will never be a role model if you aren't the adult they wish they could be. Being just another kid like them makes you far less interesting than being an adult who, despite his adult status and success still cares about them.
