I don't think it's fair to blame the churches. Church attendance in Oz is low and the church communities there, so far as I can judge, are more liberal and inclusive than they tend to be in USA. Not nearly enough is done to help young gays find somewhere they can feel that they belong. It's very hard for the churches to play that role successfully - even if they wanted to.
