These three films aren't really BL-themed so much as boy-themed, but they're among my favourites, and all great for the Christmas season:
1. It's rather sentimental and a bit pious - but 'Millions' has a quirky charm and wry humour that I find irresistible: MILLIONS (2004): Millions is a 2004 British comedy-drama film, directed by Academy Award–winning director Danny Boyle, and starring Alex Etel, Lewis McGibbon, and James Nesbitt. The screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce adapted his novel while the film was in the process of being made. The novel Millions was subsequently awarded the Carnegie Medal. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366777/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thwQYOeTSKc (trailer) 2. On a more sombre note, for dark winter days there's this marvelous and harrowing bit of medieval sci-fi theological fantasy (how often do you see a film billed like that?): THE NAVIGATOR: A MEDIEVAL ODYSSEY (1988): The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey is a 1988 feature film, an official Australian-New Zealand co-production, directed by Vincent Ward. It won numerous New Zealand and Australian awards, including the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film, and several awards at European fantasy film festivals. Its American video release title was The Navigator: An Odyssey Across Time. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095709/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CyoeDna5PE (all available on Youtube) 3. A popular children's book turned into a lovely film starring the former boy treble Anthony Way. TOM'S MIDNIGHT GARDEN (1999): Tom's Midnight Garden is a 1999 family fantasy film directed by Willard Carroll and starring Nigel Le Vaillant, Marlene Sidaway and Serena Gordon. After going to stay with his uncle a boy is disappointed that he doesn't have a garden he can play in. However, he discovers a secret garden that only appears in the middle of the night. It was based on the novel Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146315/plotsummary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot0Nmf3M0sM (all available on Youtube) |
