The passage you mentioned, Philipians 2:12-13 ("work out your salvation...") forms the foundation of one of the points of Calvinism, Irresistible Grace.

Are you are sure you are familiar enough with Calvinism to make a declarative statement about its scriptural support?


Jesus said a lot about people being cast into the city dump (The Valley of Hinnom). You could create a theology which sees that as symbolic of a place in the afterlife filled with fire and suffering, like medieval scholars did. But that's obviously not the only interpretation, nor the most direct. The word hell in the way we use it simply didn't exist in Jesus' time, he could not have uttered it, it hadn't been invented yet. See my response to Eldad for more on this.
