Hi Dirk, Silly is as silly says, but is it not true that "gamete" means "partner", rather than "wife" (specifically feminine). Or "half"? I don't have a Greek dictionary at hand, but my question is based on biology: the sex cells (sperm, ovum) are both called "gametes". Does it make sense to call the sperm a "wife". But calling it "partner" (or better, "half") does make sense. Then again, ovum (the female's egg) is, from Latin, a masculine word, is it not?, which goes to show how much sense grammer and linguistics really makes :) Regards, Fod |
