'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom'

as Ps 111 v10 reminds us; a lesson which the churches that prefer to talk incessantly about the love of God might do well to remember.

It's what Jesus taught - 'do not fear those who kill the body.... fear him who .... has the power to cast you into Hell'. Lk12 v 4,5

I suspect that like the instruction to love, the issue here is not about not feeling the emotion, but rather about how you act in response to this reality; do you act on the basis that God can do this, or do you assume that you can get away with anything and God will ultimately forgive you regardless of what you do. In practice and most of the time we are probably more motivated by love of God - but at times that can fail to be a strong enough deterence from doing the things which we ought not to!

Does that make any sense?

(I've split this response from the other on the basis that there are two very distinct issues raised by this single post - I hope they both develop!)
