Was I Loved?

I know that on BC they talk about being a loved boy. And I don't know if we here at CBLF have. To be honest, the two boards sometimes blur together. But anyway, I used to always feel jealous of guys who had an AF when they were younger. Because my father left me and my mother when I was 7. We weren't always part of a church so I didn't hvae a youthleader who would help me out fatherly or a pastor at that matter. Not having a man in my life as a child really hurt... then I started thinking. And realized, there was a man who was very interested in me when I was 10-12.

His name was Chuck. My mom started going to a group of single parents who have children. She wanted to start having fun again. I thought she was trying to find me a daddy! But she never did. But one of her female friends knew two guys who lived together named Mike and Chuck. She introduced my mom to these two fine young men. (Actually they were probably 35 or so).

Well, this guy Chuck was always around. Or at least my mom was always seeing him. He worked as a waiter and at a quick store near our house. We'd always go there to see him and eat or get what we needed.

All the things Chuck would do for me was amazing. He'd take me to the gym to work out. You should see an overweight 12 year old trying to do a treadmill! LOL How could anyone love me. He would play chess with me. even though it was checkers with the chess pieces. He'd take me to the park. he'd go bike riding with me. He'd plant stuff in his garden with me. He even let me "claim" some of his plants. Even though he'd always water them and I'd do nothing except call it my own.

But my favorite memory of Chuck was when he went trick-or-treating with me! WE went for the whole day! (it was problaby 2 hours... but it was light when we started and really late when we stopped). he took me to all the BEST houses. Or at least they seemed like it because Chuck would always talk them into giving me more stuff! Then we went to a huge stripmall. We went into EVERY Single store and got something from each one! I still remember going into a hair salon. And they said, "I'm so sorry we don't have any candy." And Chuck plead my case. He would flirt with the receptionist until she said, "Well, we do have some cough drops." And I got some of those.

Unfortunately I lost contact with Chuck because his landlord evicted him and Mike. I always drive by his house and think a little about him. But he died when I was 16 or so. He died of Aids and it was a huge shocker when we found out that both he and Mike had it. :-(

But Chuck showed me how much it really means to a child when you care enough to be part of their life.

God bless.
Huck
