Roman Catholic doctrine views Mary (as well as all other Saints) as mediators between believers and God. Therefore, prayers can be addressed to them.

Protestants, on the other hand (especially in the Reformed tradition to which I belong), believe there is only one mediator between God (the Father) and mankind, and that is Jesus Christ. All prayers are addressed to God the Father through Christ.
