Why is it you compare belief in God to an awful looking, bad smelling, foul tasting albeit beneficial medicine?

Because that's the way Jim sees it. Many Christians and much of Christian history has made the medicine, Jesus, seem like a bad thing even though it's the best thing anyone could ever have! To Jim, Christian beliefs stink, leave a bad taste in his mouth, and look bad for many reasons; therefore, he stays away from knowing the real benefits of believing in God.
