Wrong belief leads to bad actions

To take some extreme examples:

The Heaven's Gate people believed that if they committed suicide, they would be reincarnated on a space ship beyond the solar system. Wrong belief led to suicide.

The Moslems who accept the Fatwa against Salman Rushdie believe they will be doing a good thing if they murder him

But of course in the context of this board:

If sexual relationships with boys are wrong before God, and I do them, and He is a God who does punish wrong doers, I'm in trouble.

Similarly if homosexual relationships are wrong.

As someone commited to those beliefs to my personal detriment (if I didn't believe God had a downer on those practices, I would be living a very different lifestyle) I have a belief about an objective reality that makes a big difference to who I am. For me not to propound those views is as irresponsible as the person who doesn't warn the walker of the dangerous weather on the way. Of course the person may continue his walk regardless, but I am no longer responsible in any way for his actions.

Of course there are some aspects of religion that are far more unknowable - though it is unwise to lump some aspects of the reformation in amongst the unimportant. But on some issues it does make a BIG difference.
