Gays already enjoy the status of "special interest group"? Bach, I am not being facetious when I say this. I wasn't aware that Congress or the supreme court had granted them that status. I am aware that a handful of states are allowing gays to marry and thus to receive spousal priveleges. And I know that there are a few corporations(I don't know which ones) prohibit not hiring a person on the basis of sexual orientation. But I wasn't aware that gays were already an acknowledged special interest group. Or are you saying that they are a special interest group by the fact that they are organized and lobbying for their "rights"?

I'm not sure that I would classify the poor as a special interest group. It seems to me that one of the criteria that would determine a special interest group is the fact that they cannot change their status such as blacks, women, and the handicapped. Understand that I am not arguing a hard line here. It probably wouldn't take too much convincing for me to change my position on that. I do know that the whole welfare system is a sensitive subject with many people supporting the good it does while may others oppose the harm it does. All I know is that Jesus said that the poor would always be with us. By that statement I think it is safe to say that we will never wipe out poverty. Please don't get me wrong here. I am not saying that we shouldn't try to help the poor. We should. I'm just not sure that the government programs are the best way to go. Actually I think the church would be a better entity to handle that ever present problem. The church I attend provides groceries for about 150-200 families each week along with classes on child care, health, Bible study, and other enabling activities and clinics.

Many people would argue that gays are in the "unable to change" category because that they are born that way. I don't believe that. I think there are too many cultural and environmental conditions that affect a person's sexual orientation. (Have I just opened up another can of worms?)

As to your comment about Christians seeing gays and lesbians as their brothers and sisters, I believe that should be done only with gays and lesbians who are Christians themselves. Scripture admonishes Christians to be separate from the world and its influences. Lot's problem in the Old Testament was that he gradually kept moving closer and closer to Sodom and Gomorrah until he actually moved into the city of Sodom. Once there he exposed himself and his family to debauchery and immorality that was so bad that God destroyed those cities and its inhabitants by fire. There is enough Scripture to get the message across to Christians, "Be in the world, but not of the world." "Be not unequally yoked." etal.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying we shouldn't have friends who are non-Christians. But our "brothers and sisters" should be those who are of like mind.

At any rate, thank you for your insights. If there are glaring holes in my logic, it is probably because it is almost 3:00 AM and I am tired.
