For many years, I have hung out in places where people use the word a lot, so I guess I assume everybody should know what I mean. It is a tough concept to describe because it can mean so many different things in different situations. I guess I was trying to describe how it works for me here, but didn't answer your question. Let me try again: I have a problem. I spend lots of my time thinking about boys. I can't talk to most people because they can't accept the kind of feelings I am having. So, I don't know if the things that I am thinking are OK, or totally whacked. I need somebody in my life that can do three things for me: 1. Listen to my thinking without rejecting me. 2. Tell me if I am doing OK. 3. Tell me if I am whacked! To make it work, we need to build two-way trust. They need to trust that what I am saying is honest. I need to trust them enough to listen to what they are telling me - and not get bent out of shape if I don't like what I hear. That is the basis of accountability. Beyond that, people sometimes add rules, committments, and other arrangements. Around here, the only rule I have seen is the unwritten rule that says we will all try to use Christian character when dealing with each other. Did that make more sense, kiowas? Nate |
