An Apple of a Drink and an Orange of Orientation

Hello Everyone,

I do not have a lot of time today but I have something I need to write about which I believe is very relivant to everyone here and it is something that I have had on my mind for a long time.

I have been asked quite a few times my thoughts about how alcoholism and boylove can compare to one another. As many of you may know, I am also a recovering alcoholic and have enjoyed a certain amount of success in my recovery to date. (Although I have also had my share of slips as well. But do not be too concerned about this because my program is VERY good and VERY strong. I am happily sober, praise God!) Well, for a long time I did not feel that this comparison would be a very good or helpful one because it always seemed like an attempt to compare apples and oranges. I have been doing a LOT of thinking about this lately, though, and I believe now that there is a wonderfully valid comparison to be made here and I think it could be of great help to all of us.

First of all, alcoholism is a disease. It is a chemical malfunction that occurs only in the bodies of alcoholics and never in what we would call "normal drinkers". If I drink even the smallest amount of alcohol, it sets off a chemical reaction that creates an overpowering craving for the stuff. I would continue to drink but the more I drank, the stronger the craving would get. It is an insidious cycle that can only be arrested with a complete and total cessation of drinking altogether. Boylove, on the other hand, has none of these properties. While it is true we can sometimes believe we have a craving for boys, let me tell you from very good personal knowledge that it is most definately NOT the same!!!

Ok, here is where a comparison CAN be made, and a very good one at that. It lies within the history of the one organization that has become an icon of hope for quite literally millions of suffering alcohilics for a great many years. Alcoholics Anonimous! The comparisons to be made in this area are, in my opinion, VERY numerous, and potentially VERY helpfull as well. The history of alcoholism is, for the most part, a social one. And it is society's attitudes which were the biggest factor in the life of the drinking alcoholic. Alcoholics were seen as bad or even evil people with bad morals and no self control. We now know that none of these ideas are true but it took A.A. many years to get this concept across to the general public. What I have to say on this is...dosen't this sound familiar? Oh, but there is more.

It took the founders of A.A. a long time to gain any kind of acceptance with the public but thier persistance won out. Today that organisation is responsable for countless saved lives. I know because I am one of them. But they had a long and difficult road to travel...just like B.L.'s do now. I have run out of time for now but I would very strongly suggest a little extra-carricular reading to anyone here who would like to get a really good picture of how our own history is unfolding right before our very eyes....that is, if we trully believe we HAVE a posative kind of a history and we can also believe in God and ourselves enough to try to persue it! I think God has given us the opprtunity to do so and a lot of that opportunity lies right here at CBLF!

Here are a few books to read...

Alocholics Anonimus Comes Of Age

Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers

Pass it On (Bill W.'s life story)

And, of course, the book "Alcoholics Anonimous"

These books can be found at prety much any library, book store, or recovery bookstore. I hope some folks here will check these out, believe me, you will see what I am talking about within the first few pages of any one of them!

I will return and write some more about this as soon as I can. Oh, I must also appologise to J because I have not gotten some questions he has asked of me answered yet. Sorry my friend, I will get it done, I have gotten a little side-tracked right now, ok?

In Christ's Great Love,
Chris
