(at the risk of dating me rather too much....)

It's a long essay, but, sorry, it doesn't actually build an argument. Yes the Roman Catholic Church is a last residue of the classical world. Yes there was at one point a BL tradition in a part of it (but it is equally valid to point out that there was a strong rejection of BL in the monastic tradition with the encouragement of beards to reduce youths' attractiveness.) Yes these days we are a small minority, and in the ancient world being a BL was acceptable - along with slavery, gladiators and crucifixion. And yes these days there is a major problem with boys not having meaningful relationships with adult men. But this doesn't actually have a lot to do with the legitimacy of sexual relationships as the basis of these mentoring relationships; I've a number of YFs and ex YFs with whom I've had very close mentoring type relationships from which we've both benefitted, and they developed without a sexual component.

Quick factual question:

The RCC (not one of the original 5 Christian churches)?

huh? Peter founded the church at Rome - even the toughest Orthodox will admit that.

But - it was a fun read, and the quote from Pericles is a stormer...
