The Gospel of Thomas is one of many Gnostic writings found at Nag Hammadi with no verification that Saint THomas the Disciple actually wrote it, but merely ascribed to him. The problem with Gnosticism is that it makes the claim that people with certain "knowledge" are better than others and disparages the resurrection of the body. These two doctrines set it apart from the gospels and epistles of the New Testament. Now, there is some debate among scholars as to whether the Gospel of Thomas is the source of some of the sayings of Jesus found in the Gospels or whether it's derived from one of them, or is a rewording of a common source now lost. |
