Empire of the Sun, by Steven Spielberg, starring a fantastic 12 year old Christian Bale (who puts HJO to shame in my opinion) Didn't do well at the box office, but it is a wonderful and beautiful film. Complex and emotionally challenging as well. There's many layers of meaning to each scene that one can only glean from sebsequent viewings. It's my most prized DVD in my collection. I like to call it the "lost Spielberg." How could anyone not like it? :) (PS - Also has John Malkovich, always a great guy, and joe Pantalonio) (Basic Plot: Christian Bale is a very affluent child living in Shanghai after the japanese Invasion of China. As a British citizen he and his family and all his affluent neighbors are immune to the wrath of the Japanese army... until Pearl Harbor, when his whole life changes. |
