"The lust seems to dissipate, but the love does not."

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction. :)

I've spent a lot of time with ex-gays, and though of course I don't know you're friend, I think it's awfully nice that you're being so considerate about his struggles in this area and want to keep from saying anything that might cause him further difficulties. Perhaps it's just a matter of knowing where a person is on their journey? The group through which I met the ex-gays, Bridges Across the Divide, had a lot of gays on it, and the ex-gays there were secure about being around gays, but I remember one guy, who had just started on the ex-gay path, talking about how meeting a guy he knew at an ex-gay meeting was awfully distracting for him. On the other hand, when I sought advice from one of the ex-gays about a problem that I was struggling with – and that she was continuing to struggle with – she wasn't upset at me enquiring, even though I didn't plan to take the ex-gay path. So I think it probably all depends on the person and on what type of situation they're in.

It's too bad, though, that you don't have anyone in real life to talk with about this. Maybe when you get settled, you'll meet somebody in your faith community that you can talk with? That's long-range planning, I know, but you seem to be at the stage for long-range planning. :)
