Bach -
When we go for the big picture, we might as well discount most of the New Testament, throughout which Paul gives detailed clues as to how to live a Godly life in Jesus.

There is no indication whatsoever in the bible that God is just looking for us to be nice people though he certainly does want us to be that. Just blindly open your bible to any passage in the NT, and you will most likely find messages of overcoming sin, being persecuted for standing up for the message of the gospel and keeping one's life focused on God.

I know that this sounds a little harsh but the truth is that it is the only way that Jesus indicated we should follow him. As a fundamentalist, I've got to believe that I don't have the right to pick and choose what aspects of Christianity I want to follow. I also have to tell you that my church is the most loving, kind, gentle, family oriented and charitable group of people that I have ever met. The harsh part of Christianity is not how one treats others, but the standards that one holds for themself.

With the utmost kindness and respect,
You are not alone.
