Indeed, the answer "God told me to do it." has been used to justify some pretty horrific actions. This is why we need one another. A notion out of the blue, a reading of scripture in a vacuum, a dream, a locution, a proclamation of "what GOD says about X" by people who have never lived X or listened to those who have; these are all dangerous and can lead to terrible things done with a sense of righteousness. We don't have to look far to see examples.

We need to examine not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us who have lived with similar circumstances. I don't expect to find answers to how I should live in a book, but in hearts and experiences. While I don't personally believe this involves saying "no" to God, I firmly believe it sometimes requires saying "no" to our concept of God. As I've said before, my idea of Hell would be to spend eternity with the God I've often seen described.....the "Love me and I'll reward you or else I'll torture you forever God".

What I would describe as "God's will" others call "karma" or "destiny" or other names. The universal notion seems to be that each of us has a life best suited to us, and is therefore its own reward.
