"In this case it is important to understand that this does not mean that the church is denying that it has the right to speak authoritatively in certain areas - what it is saying is that the individual may sometimes need to hold to his conscience over against the view of the church and the church should not use physical FORCE to make him act against it."

Indeed, the quotations I cited by no means say the church is denying its right to speak authoritatively. I used them to illustrate what I believe to be a balanced approach to discerning God's will in situations such as those we face. Rather than relying solely on church teaching or on scripture interpretation, we are counselled to also use prayer, aid from the Holy Spirit, the witness of others, and the advice of others.

"However those of us who choose to form and continue in sexual relationships with boys should, in my opinion, be excluded from the fellowship of the church because such behaviour is endangering ones' salvation; this state should be marked by the church's statement of its dissatisfaction."

The church at one time excluded people from fellowship (and more) if they maintained the earth was not the center of the universe, thereby (in the view of the church) endangering their salvation.
