non-canonical writings

Personally, I've gotten far more out of the Didache, the Epistle of Barnabas, and the Shepherd of Hermas. In the second century, the epistles of St. Ignatius of Antioch are worthwhile studying -- the scholarly consensus now seems to be that the middle recension is the authentic one. And whether you place the writings of Dionysius the Areopagite in the first or the fifth century, there is plenty there to keep wanna-be mystics occupied. The best part about all of these writings is that they are solidly orthodox in their teachings. In fact, several of them were briefly considered for inclusion in the canon! (The Proto-Evangelium of James is also instructive reading, although it's only the Eastern Churches which accept it as authentic.)

The War of the Sons of Light with the Sons of Darkness is good for a giggle, but ya gotta wonder if David Koresh didn't get into it just a tad too much...
