The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth.

If we are believing that which is not true, then we are not hearing God successfully in that area.

If 'knowing God' is what it is all about (cf Mt 7 v 22), then a failure to hear God in this way casts doubt upon the reality of your relationship with God.

As with so many things in the Christian life, it is not a perfect guide to where the person is at - as James 2 v19 might be paraphrased, Satan could sign anyone's statement of faith (if it was accurate :-)), but it is a indicator to the reality of the person's faith. Thus it is important to all those who care enough about the person to want them to be in touch with the living God. And for ourselves, looking at our faith against the teaching of the church becomes an indicator of whether we are in touch with what they are in touch with.
