The alternative view starts with such passages as Rev 2 v 10:

12"To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13I know where you live - where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city - where Satan lives. 14Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. 15Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.

Note that the error of tolerating in membership the people who hold these views is sufficient for Jesus to warn that he would 'fight against them with the sword of my mouth'. The warning relates to those who propound sexual immorality. The conclusion for me is that I'm unwilling to be fully involved in a church which propounds certain views about homosexuality... How that works out in practice in dealing with Christians from the opposite opinion in a casual contact is that I need to make my view known clearly if it emerges - but then move on without harping on about it. But it leaves me uncomfortable to spend too much time with those of the opposing view point: as Paul expresses it 'Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character." '(I Cor 15 v 33). Or as Luther expressed it even more pointedly:
'If I profess with the loudest voice and the clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at the moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved and to be steady on all the battlefield beside, is mere flight and disgrace if he flinch at that point.'

IMHO the gay issue is that point at the moment... I like to believe that my involvement with this forum is successfully modelling this pattern of interaction, and the fact that it avoids the tag 'church' makes me more comfortable being here. I'm currently mulling over whether to get involved with CJAT because its view is out of line with mine.
