I'd say it was obsession with looks. People in clubs judge one another within minutes and only on physical criteria. The only place to meet someone is to get to know them really well and that's hard (though not impossible) on the gayscene. There comes a point, after several one-night stands, that you forget what you're 'looking for' anyway and it can be downhill from there. Also the gay scene can be strangely obsessive: in the sense that it doesnt allow you to be 'yourself' outside of a sexual context so it narrows one's view not only of 'partners' but of everyone else as well. In the chase for a partner, sex becomes magnified way beyond it's real significance and everything else can be lost in the dust.
Having said all that, if you could find an MCC where you could meet other gays outside the clubs that can put a whole different perspective on things. I met some amazing guys in the short time I was attending. I would still attend now if I was near enough but I had to move away and we don't have many MCC's in uk.
