Treatment with a "Christian counselor" can run the gamut from "theophostic counseling" which is a bunch of recovered memory nonsense, to legitimate cognitive behavioral approaches.
I have only heard of "theophostic" referred to as "theophostic prayer", not "theophostic counseling", and from what I understand about it, the purpose is specifically NOT to counsel but to allow the Holy Spirit to do the ministry. That being said, I have some friends, who I trust are "solid" in their Christian walk, who are quite involved with it. Also, I have one friend in particular who was profoundly changed (in a good way) through the experience. So, all in all, I see "theophostic" in a positive light. Maybe this goes to Blackstones point that you shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are many different options available, and just because one doesn't work out -- or someone speaks badly of another -- doesn't mean it should be eliminated without further investigation. [BTW, unlike the Christian counseling you paid for, I understand that theophostic is generally dealt with as a ministry of a church or small group, and is usually not something for which one would have to pay. It would be like "getting prayer" from some friends at church ... just a bit more formalized and guided in its approach.] Blessings, Rainboy |
