I would not discount the value of professional help based solely on your experience with a single counselor. To do so would be like discounting the value of all forms of health care based on the failure of a single homeopath. It could be that the homeopath was useless, but a real medical doctor could have treated you (or maybe even a different homeopath).
"Counselor" is not a very well regulated title, thus it doesn't actually require that the person know anything. Christian counseling is an even murkier field since it throws spiritual theories into the mix. Treatment with a "Christian counselor" can run the gamut from "theophostic counseling" which is a bunch of recovered memory nonsense, to legitimate cognitive behavioral approaches. If you are to the point where you feel you need professional help, your best bet is with a psychiatrist. Not only can a psychiatrist offer you the cognitive tools to overcome your current crisis, but they are even able to provide you with medications that can help hold you over until you have overcome your issues. I'm not saying you actually need this. Perhaps you don't. All I am saying is you shouldn't discount the entire mental health community based on your experiences with a single individual, specially when that individual represents a minority, "alternative" approach to mental health. |
