The way I read the bible is by taking the position that God *did* dictate every word. The story in Genesis is, exactly, the story of creation as it actually happened. However, reading the Bible today is not quite as straightforward because the message of the bible was written in a different language, in a different culture, by people who had a different understanding of things than we do today. All this must be taken into account when (literally) interpreting what the Bible says.
