what does it mean to be "godly" and how is this definition compatible with
being gay?

Splash, what an excellent summary of the whole question.

The issue is, of course, the sex. No one has a problem with someone having "really close best friends", if they're not having sex.
But, just a minute, is that actually true? I wonder, if I identified in my church as "gay", but agreed to be committed to celibacy, but still called myself gay, would that be good enough for them?
I really don't know the answer to that question.

"To be a godly man"...means to be a "man after God's own heart", neh? That's the phrase the Bible uses of David, that philanderer (we won't make suggestions about his relationship with Jonathan here. Which, by the way, Huck, is what F.O.D. means. Friend of Dave's. A reference to Jonathan, who was, one can argue, a boylover.)
David was in many ways a dreadful person, a dreadful person. The whole thing with Bathsheba, her husband. The vindictiveness at his end of days, having Solomon bump off that old fogey who had insulted him in his younger days. Yet, he was a man after God's own heart. I think there is something deep to be learnt there about what it means to be a godly man. Not that that excuses us to go run off and have sex with anyone we please. But, even in the context of his sinfulness, David was a godly man.

What is a "godly person" ? Perhaps, someone, who is in love, with God ?
