"Yet we don't see the kind of stupid, superstitious hysteria about eating that we do about sex."

I agree with you absolutely – I think that the world would be a much better place if people showed as little hysteria about sex as they do about eating. But that doesn't mean that people are uniformly sensible in their eating habits. In fact, I'd say that evidence shows quite the contrary.

You know, what amazes me most about you, Jim, is that whenever we establish that we're in agreement with each other you'll continue yelling at me.

I assume that it's because you want us to be in exact agreement with each other, so that I am a clone of you. Honestly, don't you think the world would be awfully dull if that happened? No disparagement on you, of course – I'd feel the same way if everyone was a clone of me. I like living in a world where people have different perspectives, and see things in different ways. I'm a multicultural kinda gal.

We both agree that, in particular circumstances, it might be wrong to have sex. We both agree that this is because, in particular circumstances, some things might be important than having sex (such as being considerate of other people's feelings).

So why in heaven's name should you be so upset that my experience of this decision-making process has been different from yours? I'm not upset at you because you haven't felt sexual desire as a destructive element in your life, because it had become uncontrollable. On the contrary, I'm envious of you. If that hasn't happened in your life, that's terrific.

All I'm asking is that you offer me the same respect that you would to a loved boy who told you that his life had been immeasurably improved by his sexual desire: that you don't assume I'm lying. Please don't assume that I'm lying, or that I'm pathological, or that I'm fucked up, or any of the other insulting terms you've used to describe my particular experiences in life. I'm not saying that you've had such experiences; I'm simply saying that I – and apparently some others – have had these experiences, and that they are genuine, nonpathological experiences that happen to a goodly number of people.
