The simple answer is that since we believe Jesus is, in fact, God, then Mary can be referred to not only as the mother of Jesus, but as the mother of God. There is still a lot of controversy within the Roman church and between the Roman church and other parts of the Catholic church about what titles to give to Mary. "Mother of God" seems to be on all Catholics agree on. Mary is seen by Catholics (of I believe all kinds) as being a kind of representative of mankind in saying "Yes" to God's will. Statues (which are becoming less common in newer church buildings) go back to the days before the printing press and wide-spread availabilty of books. Each statue was designed to call to mind certain stories from scripture or from the lives of saints. The tradition continued down through the years and the statues still serve the same purpose today. ---Ford |
