means that if Jesus was FULLY human and not merely play acting, he needed the power of the Holy Spirit to operate by, as do we; it would not be legitimate for him to operate by his own power as the second person of the Trinity as in that case he is not FULLY human. (see Luke 4 v 14) Note that if this is not the case, the doctrine of a valid propiation of sins by the MAN Christ Jesus collapses; there is no great achievement for God to remain sinless by his own power, but in depending on the Spirit's power, he establishes that it can be done, thus breaking the legal debt against all humanity (Col 2 v 14) Note that it is the perception that Jesus is not fully human that is one of the reasons that people prefer to pray to Mary rather than Jesus directly - which is where this thread started!! And also that WE can share in that power and be a channel for its release to the world - now there's a painful challenge.....

It is difficult for me to accept the interpretation of the John passage as not including the real giving of the Holy Spirit. If that is NOT what happened, why did Jesus do it. Clearly all the power was not there at first - that is what the events of Pentecost are about - but the presence of the Spirit making a significant difference to their state of mind is the least that is consistent with Jesus' actions then. On the other hand this is a detail with little doctrinal significance; the other is rather more significant.
