I think it's safe to say that it was believed in OT times that God was directly responsible for virtually everything that happened. Any major event had to be explained in terms of why God would have caused it to happen. The book of Job was an early attempt to move beyond the idea that anything perceived as bad must be a punishment from God. Jesus continued in this direction. Clearly, even infinite patience and unlimited forbearance are of no effect without repentance. The father in the story of the prodigal son could have waited forever, but it was up to the son to return. Had he chosen not to, he would have had to live eternally with his choice......separation from his father. ---Ford |
