it is clear from the New Testament that there is a call to repentance at the heart of the gospel - a desire to go God's way to the best of one's ability. To the extent we are trying to live as God wants, to the best of our knowledge, we are 'believing' in Him - however 'successful' we are; I have no doubt there will be many in heaven with a very poor record of behaviour, but because they were doing their best God accepted them, whereas there will be a lot of surprised people who've come to believe in their own sanctity as the reason for them to make it who will be rather disappointed. So there's no simple answer - and certainly 'ticking the boxes' of going to church, reading the bible, being baptised, tithing etc is not the answer..... |
