Dear Brothers, The last few days, I and others have come under some criticism for accusing Mavrick of lying in his posts. Apparently, we mistakenly gave the impression that this was our opinion, as opposed to hard fact. I should think it obvious that the entire thing is a fabrication , but there are specific instances where he has demonstrably lied, and in the interests of clearing my name and those of others of the charge of slander, I would like to point out one of them. In one of his introductory posts a few months ago ( http://www.cblf.org/messages/19114.htm), and in several others at the same time, Mavrick claimed to be using a "Speak and type" program. In this specific post, "JR" came up and allegedly had a conversation with him while he was typing, and it showed in the resulting post, as he couldn't delete it. Well, the truth is that even if somebody coming up and talking to you from a couple feet away could cause the software to type the words accurately (which it could not), any questions this person asked you would not be followed by question marks, unless they said "question mark." For example, to get the output in the post, JR would have had to say, "What are you doing question mark?" This may seem like a subtlety, but it's also a hard fact -- this post is NOT what Mavrick said it was, and that text is NOT JR talking into the microphone. So, can I not forgive one little lie? Well, yes, I can, but Mavrick's entire line of posts stretches credulity beyond the elastic limit, and such proveable examples as this of him making something up for effect causes me to disbelieve the entire incredible story. As I said before, at the very best it is a dramatically fictionalized version of the truth. I have no doubt that I will again be assailed by some on this board; I regret that such an attitude of unselfcriticism has come into the Church, but such is life. I wish to clear myself and others of slander, for the record and for those who will take the trouble to examine the case dispassionately. Again, I have nothing but love and best wishes for everybody on this board, including Mavrick, Paul, Chris, and anybody else. I am not motivated by deep-seeded distrust of everybody; indeed, I emailed Mavrick thanking him for the encouragement of one of his original posts, before it became clear what was going on. I hope that any further discussion, should it occur, can take place calmly as between brothers having a disagreement, for that is what we are. Love, ATN |
