Hello Oliver,

Back in the early 70's when I taught in public schools, I never considered it a problem to be part of my student's personal lives. Nor did anyone else, including parents and administrators. Neither was it a problem for teachers back in the supposedly hallowed, indeed sacred days of the 50's when I was a kid.

But now that fear is used as a marketing device, the picture is different. Also since I'm teaching at the college level now, my current situation would be different from yours. My personal policy now is refrain from outside activity with any current students. This ban would not extend to public events in which they were participants though....basketball games, plays, concerts, etc. I'd definitely go to those, especially if asked to. However, I wouldn't go to private party for them....not as long as they were current students.
