Hi Danny,
don't think I've seen you on the board here before. Welcome!

You make some good points, and address what I think of as the "social argument". If the objections to homosexuality in the Bible arise only because of social objections, then it makes sense that if gay relationships are a respected part of our society today, then there's no reason to continue religiously objecting to them. We see that in the biblical verses about women, for instance. There are verses which say a woman should keep her head covered in church, which most churches today, most western churches, at least, say is irrelevent to our society and can therefore be ignored.

Your other point, about secular influences on the bible, can be more threatening to think about for those used to calling the bible the "Word of God". It raises the question, can the apostle (Paul) have been wrong? He himself states in a couple of letters that he is only expressing his own opinion, not that of God's. How do we discern his opinion from God's opinion? Another point about secular influence is a curious reference Heather once gave me, quoting a Roman ( or was it Greek?) secular writer who was condemning homosexuality in no uncertain terms using precisely the same language Paul uses in Rom 1. It would be nice if Heather could find that reference again, and I would make a more permanent record of it, but I fear, alas, it is lost.

Thanks for your comments,

Fod
