Lest anyone should boast, as Ephesians says. Forgiveness is the free gift of God made available because of the death of Jesus on the cross at Calvary. The belief that you have to earn your way to heaven is a confusion of the Catholic belief in earning time off purgatory with a legalistic concept most worked out in Islam that the good things that you do count as pluses, the bad as minuses, and the balance is struck at the end. This however is not the Christian belief that starts from the fact that everyone is in rebellion against God and deserves Hell -regardless of how 'good' they have been in this life.
