"Just the other day, I was in a discussion with other leaders of my church about how we wish we had a more diverse congregation. Unfortunately, in the region where I live, it is common for churches to be segregated. It's not that churches want to be segregated, it's that those who belong to an underrepresented group in a particular church are not likely to stick around long enough for others who look like them to feel comfortable attending the church. If only they had stuck around a little longer, another family might have felt comfortable staying, then another, and another, and we would have that cultural diversity we seek. But they left and so did the next family, and the next, and things remain the same."
I was just thinking how different history might have been if Pope Paul iii had been able to say this at the council of trent back in the 1570's. (I took out two words and replaced one other.) |
