I was riding in the car with my friend today, and we were talking about books. I had started reading the Harry Potter series (to see if they lived up to all that hype), and I mentioned to him that I really liked it. I had also read Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow (both dealing with boys) recently, and I told him I really liked those, too. He then commented on another series of books I might like. Why, I ask? Because they seem to deal with a subject I seem to like, little boys and their adventures and coming of age stories. (Uh oh!) Really, I ask? Sure, he replies. You seem to like those kind of movies, too. My Life as a Dog, The 400 Blows, The Butcher Boy, Daryl, The Neverending Story, and so on. I kind of shrugged it off, and said, Yeah, I guess I do, don't I. Later on, I mentioned something about a line from the movie Oliver!, and he commented that that was also one of those kinds of movies. Earlier, I had made a comment to him about my love of music and my desire to learn piano so I can be a choir director someday (since my voice alone is not enough, I need to learn an instrument), and he made a joke (I hope!) saying Yeah, then you can be near little boys all the time. I said, well I didn't just mean a boys choir director (although I did kind of have that in mind), but I said that directing a boys choir would be cool. It seems that I'm running into some dangerous territory here. This friend is the same one I talked about in my last post, the one I called Bruce. He would never understand my attraction to boys, especially since he was abused by his foster father when he was a boy. In the interest of our friendship, I can't tell him how I feel. However, I also can't have him find out because that would be worse. I'm open to advice on how to handle this if these comments from him continue. Should I shrug them all off as a joke, or should I be somewhat honest about the types of movies and books that I like and hope he doesn't connect my preferences with boylove?
