A lot of people ask the same question, even God's own people -- "Why would God come down and be born in the flesh only to be abused by man and crucified on a cross?" I'll try to answer this the best I can, as a Christian to a non-Christian, while also trying to be brief and to the point. Jews and Christians are aware of something called The Law. The Law is something that was created by God to be a sort of "rule" as to how His creation should function. According to the Law, as God's creatures, if we sin we have no "right" to God or eternal life. The wages of sin is death and every man has sinned (cf. Romans). Jesus came to be the only man who would never sin so that he could be a pure sacrifice (according to The Law) for mankind. According to the Law, certain animals were sacrificed to cover certain sins, but only temporarily. Some animal sacrifices would cover one man's sin for a time, while other animal sacrifices would cover a family's sin, or even a nation's sin. But the only sacrifice that could cover all of mankind's sin (permanently) had to be the sacrifice of a pure man -- Jesus (the sacrifical Lamb of God). And through His death, He paid our debts ("for the wages of sin is death") and we now have a "right" through Jesus to cross through "the valley of the shadow of death" and enter into eternal life and into the presence of God.

Here's a couple links that probably do a better job explaining this:

If not, please keep searching.

"Surely He has borne OUR griefs, and carried OUR sorrows . . . He was wounded for OUR transgressions, He was bruised for OUR iniquities (sins): the chastisement of OUR peace was upon Him; and with HIS STRIPES (His wounds) we are healed." Isaiah 53:4,5 -- Also read Psalm 22.
