One of the clear teachings of the Old Testament is that God's patience is not infinite; this is especially clear in the ministry of Jeremiah, where the prophet is given the task of telling the covenant people that their turning from God to idols will result in their punishment - and it all comes true when Jerusalem is sacked by the Babylonians.

God is active in history
God will only tolerate so much
Ultimately - and with pain at having to do it - he will act to destroy the evil in the world.

We don't get that preached today and to that extent we are not telling the whole story about our God. We are supposed to be his ambassadors - but we generally leave out the nasty bits, and as a result an incomplete story is heard.

Incidentally, yes I am appealing to the old Testament, because that was the authority to which Jesus appealed; consider Jesus with the disciples on the road to Emmaus after the resurrection 'He expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself'. It was the whole bible for the early church, and was the basis for the authority of the church in challenging Judaism. Sadly for too many of us it is seldom opened area.
