We seem to have trouble saying that sexual contact will cause harm because we know that it doesn't necessarily do so. We want to be honest about this, but we will scare away people. But isn't the real reason the church, and society, believe sex is wrong because of moral beliefs? This is different from the question of harm. Society believes it is morally wrong because of the power difference, even if no harm results. The church goes farther, believing any sex outside heterosexual marriage is immoral (or in the very liberal churches, sex outside a permanent monogous commitment is immoral). So I suggest we change the statement to refer to moral beliefs rather than the question of harm. Mark |
